While carrying the US 119th Infantry from Hoboken, New Jersey, to Liverpool, Ascania was in a convoy attacked by German U-boats on the night of 26 May 1918. Despite the close call, she managed to arrive safely at her destination the following day.

Less than three weeks later, Ascania was a wreck on the Newfoundland coast.
