One of the joys of being a kid in New York in the 1960s and 70s was being able to head down to the waterfront and look for arriving or departing liners.
On Friday 16 July 1971, I traveled with my friend Jonathan Bird to the foot of W. 42nd Street, the Circle Line pier, to board one of the company’s vessels for the famous four-hour trip around Manhattan. Most of all, we wanted to see the historic North River piers and any liner that might happen to wander into the neighborhood.
As you will see on the following pages, despite the overcast, slightly foggy weather, we weren’t disappointed.
