7. Oceanic (1965)
Oceanic, the flagship of the Home Lines fleet, was originally designed to operate as a two-class transatlantic liner. But with the liner market rapidly succumbing to airline competitors in the mid-1960s, Oceanic was sent directly into cruising. It was a smart move. Oceanic soon became a highly popular cruise ship sailing out of New York to Bahamian and Caribbean ports. Oceanic was renowned for her fine food, excellent service and spacious recreational facilities, including a pool featuring a retractable dome. She marked a transition between older liners that focused primarily on transporting passengers to exotic destinations and the modern concept of the cruise ship as a vessel that provides her own unique on board holiday experience.
