Adriatic (1871)

1872: History’s great transatlantic rivalry reached full steam on 25 May 1872 when White Star Line’s Adriatic (1871) took the Blue Riband from Cunard Line’s Scotia (1862), completing a westbound transatlantic crossing in 7 days, 23 hours and 17 minutes at an average
speed on 14.53 knots. Scotia had held the Riband for nearly nine years. Cunard would have to wait over 13 years to reclaim the high-speed honor.

2003: A boiler explosion on board Norway (ex-France) in Miami killed eight crew members and seriously injures several others
