Incidentally, one of the great, satisfying ocean liner sights we’ll never see again is a brand new liner sliding down the slipway. Modern cruise ships are so massive that launching them down a slipway might cause the vessel to crash into the opposite shore. Slipway launches also impose unnatural, possibly damaging, stresses on a ship’s hull, which provides another reason to avoid the technique.
