6. Andrea Doria
In the years after World War II, Italian Line gradually returned to the seas with a series of sleek, yacht-like vessels of which the 29,083 GRT Andrea Doria was the most famous and luxurious. She was a favorite of movie stars, models, politicians and other seekers of “la dolce vita.” But Andrea Doria’s sweet life ended tragically in July 1956 on a dark and foggy night off the coast of Nantucket Island.
