Titanic Survivor Madeleine Force Astor

A grand day for walkies.

The Disaster
On the night of 14 April 1912 the Astors were in relaxing their suite onboard Titanic when the liner struck an iceberg. After investigating the situation, Astor asked his wife to get dressed and to join other the other passengers waiting to leave the sinking vessel. After ensuring that Madeleine got into one of the lifeboats, Astor selflessly helped several women and children escape the doomed liner.

Astor remained behind and met his death when Titanic sank in the early hours of 15 April.
Madeleine Astor and the other survivors in Lifeboat 4 were rescued by Cunard Line’s Carpathia.

The Aftermath
About four months after the disaster, Madeleine gave birth to a son, John Jacob Astor V, named after the father he would never know. Recognized throughout his life as the “Titanic Baby,” the Astors’ son died in 1992.
