Cunard Line’s Queen Elizabeth 2 began her final acceptance trials on 23 December 1968 after an unexpected delay. As this brief contemporary newsreel report explains, a faulty oil valve during QE2’s initial speed trial allowed lubricant to leak into one of the liner’s boilers, contaminating the system and forcing a shutdown. The failure also caused the cancellation of a pre-launch charity cruise.
