Dr. Carl E. Foss floated in the water for two hours before being picked up by the tugboat Indian Empire. Dr. Foss, an American physician, was traveling to England aboard Lusitania to offer his services to the Red Cross Association. He died in 1924 at age 36 from a kidney ailment possibly caused by his lengthy immersion.
