Three days before her scheduled arrival on Wednesday 17 April 1912, New York was eagerly anticipating the arrival of the largest ocean liner ever to enter the city’s harbor.
The New York Times article below is packed with superlatives.
“When the Titanic steams into the Hudson this week, New Yorkers will see a ship that is more than four city blocks long.”
“…if stood on end would be 181.7 feet higher than the Metropolitan Life tower.”
“…220 feet higher than the Singer Building.”
“…passenger accommodations … are among the most gorgeous ever built.”
There’s no mention of her lifeboats, however. It must have been an oversight.
