A little bit of ocean liner history was made on 22 April 2008 when three Cunard Line “Queens” met in their homeport—Southampton—for the first time ever. Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2 and the then-new cruise ship Queen Victoria saluted the soon-to-retire Queen Elizabeth 2 with their whistles and passengers’ cheers. It was impossible not to feel a tingle at the sight of three massive passenger ships, thousands of happy people on shore and deck and scores of vessels of all sizes surrounding QM2 as she passed by QE2 and Queen Victoria and then began to make her way down the Solent.
Sadly, if Cunard’s Queens were to meet in their respective homeports today, the event would have to be held in Hamilton, Bermuda. Not quite the same.
