In 1985, the late Nicolas Noxon joined Robert Ballard’s expedition in the North Atlantic to explore the recently discovered Titanic wreck. The resulting National Geographic film, “Secrets of the Titanic” (1986), included the first images of the doomed ocean liner. The hour-long documentary also served as the inspiration for James Cameron’s 1997 feature.

Much has been learned about Titanic in the decades since “Secrets” was made. Yet it is still an intelligent and thought-provoking film, much assisted by the expert narration of actor Martin Sheen.
