Queen Mary’s first voyage, her perilous March 1936 journey down the River Clyde from the John Brown and Co. shipyard to the sea, was almost her last. Shallow, muddy water delayed her progress and at one point it appeared that the new superliner was at risk of serious and potentially fatal damage.
