1915: Lusitania Departs for Liverpool

Cunard Line’s Lusitania departed New York on 1 May 1915, beginning her 101st and what would turn out to be her final eastbound crossing.

No one knows how many passengers and crew members saw the notice the Imperial German Embassy placed in several New York newspapers that morning, warning travelers that sailing “in the war zone on ships of Great Britain or her allies do so at their own risk.”

Lusitania departed New York on schedule at noon, bound for Liverpool but destined for history.
