As incredible as it may sound now, for a time it seemed inevitable that Titanic would gradually fade into the mist of history, overshadowed by even larger and more tragic events. One man is largely responsible for rescuing the Titanic disaster from obscurity and turning it into the industry that is today. In the late 1920s, New York author Walter Lord, intrigued by the Titanic disaster after a voyage on sister ship Olympic, began collecting survivors’ tales and deeply researching the events leading up to the liner’s destruction.  Below is a 1955 Chicago Tribune newspaper clipping that describes Lord’s research work, which led to “A Night to Remember,” the book that reawakened the public to the Titanic tragedy.
